The Jaintia Student Union raise alarms over the cement companies mining lease

Jowai, Jan 15: The Jaintia Student Union (JSU) under the leadership of its president Mr.Lawyerson War is in deep concern over the legality of the way all the cement companies functions in East Jaintia Hills district. It was observed that many of the cement companies and their subsidiary plants are not having any proper mining lease to extract limestone for their clinkers productions.

To be more precise about the list of mining lease issued to all the cement plants in east jaintia hills district, they have already filed an RTI  with the office of The Director of Mineral Resource, Shillong, Meghalaya.

The student body would approach the NGT Court to take actions against the cement companies who extract limestone illegally or purchase the limestone from illegal miners who has not received any mining lease, EC, Consent to Establish and consent to operate from SPCB.

The president of the student union Mr.Lawyerson War had earlier filed a PIL on 16th September, 2019 with objectives of stopping the issuance of the incidental challans by the forest department, and to consider it an illegal document which enables transportation of illegally mined limestone as it is not mentioned in the Meghalaya Minor Minerals Concession Rules, 2016.

The JSU alleged that the illegal mining activities are still flourishing in both east and west jaintia hills district, we request the concerned authority to totally ban illegal minor minerals mining, and take actions against those frequent offenders by asking them to rehabilitate the illegal mining areas and punish them as per the rule 36 of the MMMCR, 2016 and the section 21(2)(4)(4a) of the MMDR ACT,1957.

The JSU is deeply concerned about the environmental damaged caused by illegal mining due to destructions of the flora, fauna and the atmosphere. It has also cause a huge loss to the state exchequer due to tax evasions, royalties etc., and livelihood of the stake holder in those areas.

The student body would like to convey its thankfulness to the NGT Panel who had recommended actions against the erring companies for the use of illegally mined coal in their plant, and also the Meghalaya Lokayukta for ordering a CBI inquiry into the alleged rackets involved in the transportation of coal, limestone etc. through various routes in both the east and west jaintia hills district.
