Shillong, July 2: The Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) and Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong (RCOCS) in collaboration with Meghalaya Integrated Mountain Development Initiative (MIMDI) and Rotaract Club of North Eastern Hill University jointly organised a tree plantation program at Umsawli, Mawpat, Shillong on the 1st of July 2020 and at Lum Warkhyllew, Umphyrnai on the 2nd of July 2020.
Besides being an extended activity of World Environment Day, the program was also an initiative towards improving the local environment in these two areas. This program was also to commemorate the Tree Plantation Week observed by Rotary Club in the first week of every July.
The inaugural session was chaired by Dr. Vincent Darlong, President, Rotary Club and Vice Chancellor, MLCU in the presence of Vivek Kumar, Secretary, Rotary Club and members of Rotary Club, MIMDI, Rotaract Club, NEHU and staff of MLCU. The Chief Guest of the event, Dr. K. Elangbam, Assistant Governor, Zone X, RI District 3240, during his address in the inaugural session lauded this effort by RCOCS and MLCU emphasising that trees are the most important elements of nature that give out something as valuable and indispensable as oxygen free of cost to mankind.
The Guest of Honour, Shri. Toni D. Marak, during his address, emphasised that humans are given the responsibility of being good and responsible stewards of nature. He also stated that preservation of nature, that is, the responsible usage of natural resources, is as equally important as its conservation.
An MoU was also signed between MLCU and Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong under which their resources will be pooled towards activities and initiatives that will benefit the community.
Members from MLCU, RCOCS, MIMDI and Rotaract Club, NEHU participated in the two-day tree planting program that was carried out with strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols.
