Shillong, April 15: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress has strongly condemned the BJP-led government for its reported actions in preventing Christians from holding a peaceful procession on Palm Sunday, a significant day of observance in the Christian faith.
In a sharp statement issued to the media, the Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress expressed deep anguish over what they described as an “unconstitutional and blatant attack” on religious freedom. “Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the Holy Week and is of great spiritual significance for Christians across the world. Denying them the right to carry out a peaceful procession is not only a violation of their fundamental rights but also a direct assault on the secular fabric of our nation,” said the President of the Mahila Pradesh Mahila Congress Smt. Joplyn Scott Shylla
The MPMC accused the BJP government of repeatedly targeting minority communities and fostering an atmosphere of fear and intolerance. “Such actions are indicative of the government’s growing intolerance towards minority religious practices. Meghalaya, known for its harmony and diversity, stands united against such divisive politics,” the statement added.
The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress also called upon civil society, religious leaders, and citizens to resist these oppressive tactics and to stand together in defense of constitutional values and religious freedom. They demanded an immediate explanation from the authorities responsible for the restrictions and urged the government to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
Reaffirming their commitment to upholding the rights of every citizen, the Mahila Congress vowed to continue raising their voice against any attempt to curtail religious liberties.
