Tura, Sept 06: The NGOs and Civil Society from Garo Hills form Joint Action Committee (JAC) to demand for a full-fledged  central University or state run University  in Garo Hills.

The senior, learned and prominent citizens of Tura had gathered for consultative meeting on the 29th Aug ’20 with the education scenario of Garo Hills in particular where several Civil Societies, NGOs etc were called upon to attend to be involved in the discussion.

The preliminary meeting held on 29th Aug’20 at Tura Christian College, several points were discussed to improve the education scenario in Garo Hills taking particular care to take into cognizance the importance of NEHU, Tura Campus, the need to demand for full fledged university and the possibility of state run university.

The GSU was given the task of organising and on the 4th Sept’20, at a meeting held at Cariz, Bonepa A’tilla, Tura the discussion progressed there was a unanimous decision of the need for the prominent NGOs, Civil Societies and Students’ Unions to reform the Joint Action Committee (JAC) which is a conglomerate platform of associations to unite for a common cause.

In this instance, the avatar of the JAC will be for the demand of a Full- fledged Central University. The issue demanded our particular attention as concerned citizens as we are being ushered into the 21st century which fully justifies our demand for better and more education institutions to cater to the academic prospects of our students.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. J.D. Sangma, Chairman, Tura Municipal Board after he was selected to lead the meeting. The welcome speech was given by the GSU President. The introductory speech on the matter was given by Mr. Sanggra A. Sangma, Lecturer, Don Bosco College, Tura.

The Chairman of the meeting informed that the legislation for three State Universities had been passed by the Meghalaya Government though it has yet to see the light of day.

It was also brought to knowledge that NEHU, Tura Campus is neglected to such an extent that there are many vacancies, the foremost of which is the post of the Asst. Registrar and there are problems galore in the campus.

The Tura campus is now almost 25 years and students of Garo Hills aspiring for higher studies are facing the problem of inadequate seats and thus missing opportunities to further their academic career. So it is high time that Garo Hills have a full fledged Central University.

The Central University will not only increase the opportunities for aspiring students but it will also have better facilities, better funding for infrastructure, salaries and job opportunities. Meghalaya has only one C.U. and 8 private Universities while even Manipur has three Central Universities.

The new members of the JAC were unanimously chosen Mr. Tengsak G. Momin President, GSU CEC, Tura as the Chairman, General Secretary Mr. Jakrimra R. Marak. President, Post Graduate Students’ Union and thirteen executive member with four advisers.
