Training programme on ‘psychosocial care in disaster management’ held at MATTI

Shillong, August 16: The National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) organised a three days Training Programme on ‘Psychosocial Care in Disaster Management’ from 16th– 18th August 2022 at the Conference Hall – I, Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute (MATTI), Mawdiangdiang, Shillong.

Smt R. Lyngdoh, Commissioner and Secretary, Department of Revenue & Disaster Management, Government of Meghalaya graced the inaugural function as the Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion, Lyngdoh lauded the efforts and contributions of unsung workers from different sectors during a disaster. She also stresses on the need of psychosocial care during any disaster.

Dr Ajinder Walia, Associate Professor, NIDM gave a brief overview about the training programme, and on how the programme will equip the participants with necessary skills in providing psychosocial care to individuals and the community in the aftermath of disasters.

The objectives of the programme is to understand varied needs of the survivors of disasters, to develop understanding on how people react in stressful situations, developing an understanding of holistic care giving approach, to understand the role of psychosocial care givers, to internalize techniques of psychosocial care giving with children, women and to understand the importance of self care and gain knowledge about skills on self care while working in stressful situations.
