Will hold consultation with the stakeholders on the Municipal election in Shillong: Prestone

Shillong, Oct 29: The Deputy Chief Minister Mr Prestone Tynsong said that the cabinet has disused on the issue of the Municipal Election in Shillong as per the letter sent from the Supreme Court last year.

Speaking to media after the Cabinet meeting, the Deputy Chief Minister said that today the cabinet has discussed at length on the issue of Municipal election, where the government earlier has written to the Supreme Court on the difficulties in holding municipal election in Shillong.

In the reply to the supreme Court , the state government has mention that out of  27 Wards Commissioner, the government  would be able to hold election only to five wards, the government has explain in holding the municipal election in detail.

In the past state government has tried to conduct twice the municipal elelction, in 17/11/1998 from 27 wards only five nominations were file in five wards, in 25/11/2000 out of 27 wards only one file nomination.

This time the cabinet has decided that the Urban Affair department to hold consultation with the stakeholders and seek the opinion after getting all views then the department concern will submit the report to the cabinet to take the decision, or if required to amendment the municipal Act.
