World Hemophilia was celebrated in NEIGRIHMS organized by Hemophilia Society Shillong

Shillong, April 18: World Hemophilia Day, an international awareness day for hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, was celebrated in Meghalaya in a state level program organized by Hemophilia Society Shillong Chapter on the 17th of April 2021.

The programme was held, with support from NEIGRIHMS and Novonordisk, in NEIGRIHMS, Shillong. The occasion was graced by the Principle Secretary, Health, Government of Meghalaya, Shri Sampath Kumar, Prof (Dr) Prithwis Bhattacharyya, Director, NEIGRIHMS and Shri David T Umdor, Deputy Director (Administration), NEIGRIHMS.

To mark the occasion, awareness talks on Hemophilia care in children and Musculoskeletal complications and their management of hemophilia were delivered and experiences were shared by hemophilia patients of the ordeal they go through in their lives.

The theme for this year is “Adapting to change: sustaining care in a new world”. Hemophilia is usually an inherited bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly due to low levels of either factor VIII (8) or factor IX (9) causing Hemophilia A or Hemophilia B respectively.

Patients may bleed spontaneously or following injuries or surgery. Many cases go undetected in the state due to lack of awareness about this disease.
