3rd Meghalaya Poetry Competition

Shillong, November 26: With an aim to promote poetry writings among the people of the state, especially the young, the All India Poetess Conference, Meghalaya Chapter in collaboration with the government of Meghalaya under Chief Minister Youth Development Scheme (CMYDS) organized the 3rd Meghalaya Poetry Competition, 2012 in the city on Monday.

Creative writings such as poetry and story writings should be encouraged among the present younger generation as most of them are engaged on in modern technologies like video games besides others said Additional Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, R. Marak while adressing the veledictory function as the chief guest.

While, lauding the AIPC for organizing such event, Marak hoped that the AIPC would continue to organize such event annually and successfully put into the minds of the youth on the importance in preserving their own literature.

Dr. Sylvanus Lamare Principal of St. Edmunds College he said that according to Khasi history every Khasi people were born as a poet adding it is up to use whether or not to choose such paths in our life.

He also said, “For a Khasi, poetry is not merely just a word but it is like a song with melodious verse, rhyming, music etc”.

“It is through poetry that people can freely express their own feelings whether sadness, happiness etc”, he added.

Meanwhile, prizes was distributed to the winners of the 3rd Meghalaya Poetry Competition, 2012 which includes Nangkyrsoi Synrem from Kelian Memorial School bagging the 1st prize, F. Christy Linda Lyngkhei of Synod Higher Secondary School and P. Bareh of JNV, Mukhla securing 2nd and 3rd prize respectively in category A (Khasi). In category A (English), Catherine Lymba of Synod higher Secondary School and Ritilin Mawlong of Shillong College bagged 1st and 2nd prize respectively. In category B (Khasi) Nisha Thongphai bagged the 1st prize while Bonny L Kharbani bagged the 2nd prize and in category B (English), H. Bankerlang Thabah of St. Edmunds’ College bagged the 1st prize and Jerry Pyrtuh of Umshyrpi College bagged the 2nd prize.(SP News)
