Shillong, July 19: The Rotary Club of Orchid City, Shillong organized a Tree Plantation Programme in collaboration with the State Sports Authority, Shillong at JN Stadium recently . Shri T T C Marak, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Government of Meghalaya, was the Chief Guest at the function.
Shri Marak, speaking on the occasion said, such programme should be organized in a mega way, to protect the environment. He said, our fore fathers enjoyed long life because they breathed clean air, drink clean water. Today, the scenario is different. The Wah Umkhrah, that used to be sparkling clear and clean, he lamented is a mere drain today and the carrier of all the filth and dirt of the city and the surrounding areas.
The president of the Club Rtn Chiranjib Choudhury expressed his happiness that on the occasion 50 tree saplings were planted. A few years ago, he recalled, the club had planted trees in the stadium and some of the trees were blooming green in the lanes of the stadium. He hoped that these evergreen saplings will also grow to provide cleaner air to the people around and the sports men and women who will play matches here.
The saplings were provided by the Forest Department, East Khasi Hills, Government of Meghalaya, at the behest of Prof. Rtn Saroj K Barik. The Programme was participated by a majority of the members of the club and the people deputed by Sports Authority of Meghalaya.(SP News)
