68.97 percent overall voting percentage in Meghalaya

Shillong, April 10: The Chief  Electoral Officer of the state Mr P Naik said that after election department received the latest report on the voting percentage, the overall voters’ turnout in the state during the Lok Sabha election was recorded as 68.97 percent.  An increase of 5 percent was achieved.

In 2009 General election, total voters turnout was 64 percent and this year it is approximately 69 percent.

The highest turnout was recorded at South Tura with 87.19 percent, while the lowest turnout of 52.65 percent was registered in Pynursla assembly constituency.

Chief Electoral Officer P. Naik expressed his happiness and said that the state election department had expected a voters turnout of 70 percent and however, ultimately voters turnout was 69 percent only one percent less than what was expected but it is five percent more than 2009.

The five districts of Garo hills combine registered 78.84 percent more than that of Khasi and Jaintia hills where it polled 63.06 percent.

The Lok Sabha polls on Wednesday in Meghalaya for the two parliamentary seats are the second phase of the parliamentary elections in the country.

The fate of ten candidates were sealed in the polling which include former Lok Sabha MP and National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Purno A Sangma has direct contest with Congress nominee twenty-seven years old Daryl William Momin. And for Shillong, there were eight candidates, including former union minister Vincent H.Pala who is facing a multi-cornered contest amid division against his candidature in his own Congress party.

This year election department has adopted various methods to woo voters to exercise their franchise.(SP News)
