7th M’laya Billiards & Snookers Championship kicks off

Shillong, Jan 27: The game of snooker and billiard which has been played for centuries is gaining momentum in the pine city has every going year more skilled and talented youths are cueing their experience in the annual tourney ‘Meghalaya Snooker and Billiard Championship’ organised by the Meghalaya Billiard and Snooker Association at Shillong club, here on Monday.

According to the secretary of the association, Narendra Singhania, every year more talented youths are participating and cueing their skills.

“This year 37 participants participated in the game of snooker and 9 participated in the billiard category,” Singhania said adding “The winners are judged in the best of three frames category.”

He also said that winner of the championship will participate in the national arena at Lucknow slated on February 14.

When asked Singhania that the game needs great precision and cueing skills which only can be achieved by better coaching, he said, “Two years back national coach Manoj Kothari visited the state and shared his knowledge and experience about the game.”

“The problem what we have is, we do not have a permanent place to place our boards,” Singhania said adding “We have apprised the state government about the problem faced by the association but till date no actions have been taken.”

He thanked the Shillong Club for being kind enough to the association by allowing to host the tournament every year.

“The state has great talents and we need to do better and showcase more talents at the national stage,” he said. (SP News)
