SHILLONG, 31 JULY: “To be a good leader one should not only have educational degrees but what is more important is to have an empathy with the people then only he will justify the position as a leader to lead the people in a right way,” said a Social Activist, Angela Rangad during the panel discussions at St Anthony’s College today.
The penal discussions on “Social, Political and Economic Agenda for the New Meghalaya Government” were organized by the department of Economics and Political Science in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social Science Research- NERC.
According to Angela Rangad for being political one should understand the problem of the public, articulate and then should put it into legislatures.
“Nowadays most of the business men want red light and so join politics and once they are in that position they want to turn the whole state as a corporate house, in a way they want to be the CEO of the state,” said the activist Angela Rangad.
Angela Rangad further said that many looks at politics as a dirty game but the fact is that each and everyone is political, “All of us in a sense are political engaging with various systems.”
Member of Legislative Assembly, Paul Lyngdoh during the discussions said that education has not perpetuated beyond urban Shillong.
“Large population of Meghalaya is still illiterate and if things are to improve there should be structural changes and quality changes,” Paul Lyngdoh said.
The MLA further said, “In a place like Meghalaya, in most cases if one wants to join politics either he has to belong to one particular Kur or religion and many other norms and it is because of these handicaps we are not able to come up with larger number of participation politically.”
Meanwhile Paul Lyngdoh urges the youngsters to be more politically conscious to carry forward the legacy.
The program which was chaired by Prof H Syiem also had prominent personalities like Toki Blah and David Laitphlang who shared their thoughts with the students of the college.(SP News)
