Shillong, May 31: The Assam Rifles is not involved in any extra judicial killings stated the Director General of Assam Rifles.
Talking to media persons at the sidelines of the ‘Go Green’ Campaign Singh said that it can never accept the report made by the Supreme Court appointed committee that the Assam Rifles is involved in any extra judicial killings.
Further Singh informed that the governor of Meghalaya had recently called for a meeting of all Assam Rifles officials including its DG for targeting innocents in fake encounters.
However he said that such statements cannot be accepted at all.
It may be mentioned that the Governor recently referring to the Supreme Court-appointed committee that reported six human rights violations committed during operations by the Assam Rifles together with Manipur Commandos had said, “I deeply appreciate your work in difficult situations, but in the name of encounters (with militants) if innocents are targeted then it cannot be accepted,” he told the stunned gathering of Assam Rifles officials.The committee was constituted to probe the alleged extra judicial killings in Manipur, which included the death of a 12-year-old boy.
Singh refused to divulge more on the issue, but however said that the governor had expressed his displeasure and termed it as unfortunate.(SP News)
