Tura, Dec 03: Today Badhte Kadam V and World Disability Day successfully celebrated in Williamnagar with over
200 Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) attending from remote corners of the district and more than 500 people from williamnagar. The Programme was kick started with Rally which was flagged off by Smt. Deborah C Marak, Minister in charge of Social Welfare Department in presence of Deputy Commissioner and other Heads of Departments. All the People with Disabilities rallied around the Williamnagar Town with intention of creating awareness about their rights as enshrined in the Constitution.
The Rally was lead by Minister herself, DC and other officials. After the Rally the Programme for Badhte Kadam V started where in professionals spoke about the rights of People with Disabilities. Smt. Deborah C Marak, Minister in charge of Social Welfare Department was the Chief Guest for the function. The function witnessed singing and dancing by the jubilant PwDs.
During the function PwDs were distributed Blankets sponsored by State Bank of India and T-Shirts sponsored by East Garo Hills District Administration. After the Programme 3 specialist doctors from different parts of the State assessed the PwDs and on-the-spot Disability Certificates were handed over to them. There was also light sports and games organized by District Sports Officer only for PwDs where in many enthusiastic PwDs participated. End of the Day, the PwDs returned to their homes in the Buses arranged by District Administration with a smile on their face.
Badhte Kadam was initiated by National Trust of India for the people with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardness and Multiple Disabilities. The objective of Badhte Kadam is to generate awareness and sensitize the community about the rights of the persons with disabilities as enshrined in the Constitution and as elaborated in the United Nations Convention on Rights of Person with Disabilities.(SP News)
