Centenial Son Rumnong has got no connection with the election

Shillong, Jan 29: Centenial Son Rumnong (22) has got no connection with the election process, said the victims father.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, GE Rynjah the victim’s father clarified that the reports was baseless as this is not a political issue and moreover, the assailants are not even residents of Pynthorumkhrah but however they were group of guys from Wahingdoh who frequently visit the locality and create nuisance.

In connection to the case police arrested seven persons believed to be supporters of the Independent candidate of the same constituency PT Sawkmie, for allegedly assaulting Centenial Son Rumnong, believed to be supporter of Congress candidate from Pynthorumkhrah constituency AL Hek.

The arrested persons have been identified as Sunny Basaiawmoit, Pynshailang Swer, Bahunlang Khongsngi, Phakos Kharshong, Donald Khongsngi, Donald Syiemlieh and Rockyland Swer.

Further narrating the incident, Rynjah informed that his son was returning from Church on Sunday at around 8.30 pm when around 25-30 boys in an inebriated condition from Wahingdoh surrounded Rumnong near St. Nanak School, Pynthorumkhrah and pounded on him.

“For 20 years, there have no such cases of violence in the run up to the elections in the constituency and my son’s assault case cannot be summed up as a violence case in the run up to the Assembly elections”, Rynjah said.

Reiterating that neither Hek nor Sawkmie has anything to do with the assault case, Rynjah said the group of miscreants who assaulted his son were youth from Wahingdoh locality who frequently visit Pynthorumkhrah to pick up a fight with anyone.

Stern with his decision to take the accused to court, Rynjah said they (Accused) will continue to create nuisance in the locality if no strict actions are taken against them. Rynjah also rejected a proposal offered by the parents of the accused to compromise stating that the only platform he will meet them will be in the court.

“This is not the first time that such incidences caused by these same boys have happened in our locality, so it is high time to teach them a lesson”, he added.

Highlighting on the condition of his son, Rynjah said that Rumnong suffered several injuries including his face and even alleged that the accused attempted to kidnap him in a car but with the interference of some on-goers, they failed to do so.

“If it would have been someone weak and feeble, the miscreants would have already succeeded in their attempt, but since my son is strong, well-built and tall, no severe damage was done”, the father said.(SP News)
