Shillong, Feb 27: Medicinal and aromatic plants are of immediate concern as they have always been used for curing many ailments in plants and animals, however, they have not been used judiciously. A workshop was conducted as a detailed roadmap is necessary to sort out their conservation and use. Meghalaya is endowed with abundant natural resources and this is articulated in its biodiversity. One of the constituents of plant biodiversity is medicinal and aromatic plants.
Traditionally and culturally medicinal plants have a wider variety of use in Meghalaya. There is a huge dependency on herbs to cure many ailments which plague the local population.
Traditional practitioners in the state have long indulged in the use of the medicinal and aromatic plants and so have pharmaceutical companies today as they are finally realising the wide ranging use of the plants. With this view in mind it has become imperative to formulate a framework to use these resources judiciously.
To promote the judicious and sustainable use of medicinal and aromatic plants a consultative workshop on Conservation and Promotion of Medicinal & Aromatic plants was held at the Sri Aurobindo Institute of Indian Arts & Culture, Shillong on 26th & 27th February at 10:30 am.
Organized by BRDC (Bio-Resources Developmental Center) in collaboration with MBDA (Meghalaya Basin Development Authority) and CSIR-NBRI(Council of Scientific & Industrial Research -National Botanical Research Institute), the workshop is a platform aimedat generating knowledge to take forward conservation, cultivation and use of medicinal andaromatic plants within the framework of sustainable development.(SP News)
