Corruption is indeed an old menace in the country:Rev M. Concessao

Shillong October 31: While the nation is still rejoicing in the victory of good over evil with the burning of Ravana effigies at Dussehra and preparing for the reign of justice at Diwali, the National United Christian Forum (constituted of the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of India; the National Council of Churches in India and the Evangelical Fellowship of India), expresses serious concerns about the unraveling of scams after scams in which so many important leaders of various political parties are allegedly involved.

“We Indians have just celebrated the great festival of Dussehra, signifying, like many other religious festivals, the victory of good over evil and are preparing for Diwali, we pray at the same time to root out evil from our own lives. But if we were to go by media reports and the exposures of India Against Corruption, the situation and the future of the country appears quite bleak”, said Archbishop Vincent M. Concessao, the president of the National United Christian Forum.

Corruption is indeed an old menace in the country and is the bane of many developing countries where it is rampant. “But India is also a country that has given birth to so many religions and philosophies which quite clearly spell out a path of honesty and truthfulness. We wonder where those values of religions have disappeared when it comes to the practice of such basic ethical values enshrined in the rich culture and religions of India”, added the Archbishop.

While appealing to all the political parties and the people of the country to fight the pest of bribery, the Archbishop has also called upon all the churches and Christians to hold special prayers to root out corruption from public life. He has also appealed to all the school authorities to make serious efforts with the students to inculcate in them genuine values of honesty, truthfulness and above all concern for others. “Though corruption is often born out of deep seated greed in us to amass wealth quickly without hard work, it also shows a total lack of concern for our own brothers and sisters in the society from whom those responsible to perform their duties, mercilessly extract money”, concluded the Archbishop according to the release fromFr. Dominic Emmanuel SVD   Convener – Media Committee (SP News)
