DCC South Garo Hills gets new president, promises to revamp grass roots through empowerment

Baghmara, 28th September: The District Congress Committee (DCC), South Garo Hills underwent a revamp after it drew a blank in the recently concluded Assembly elections in the district. While the system has remained the same, a change of personnel was undertaken after a meeting with the Chief Minister. The DCC got a new President, Suraj R Marak, who is now taking up the mantle to not only revamp the whole sector, but build on the grass route levels within the district.

The South Garo Hills has three assembly sections, Rongara, Chokpot and Baghmara. Commenting on his commitment to making the party a strong presence, the new President S R Marak said, “We are aware of the debacle that happened the last Assembly and now our focus has been to bring about change through grass root level changes. Many of the workers earlier had left the Congress at the last moment, which affected our preparations. We are using the opportunity to revamp and filter into the roots within the district. We are sure that all the units will work together and bring about change in the fortunes in the coming MP and MDC elections”.

The Congress Party has had a lot of loss in support in recent times in the SGH region and the new team is sure it has the capability to change the fortune of the party under the leadership of Mukul Sangma. Florence T Sangma, an old time workhorse for the party and the President of the Mahila Congress, SGH said, “The CM has been an example for us and we would like to permeate his development schemes to the whole populace. Our Blocks will be trained on the latest schemes and understanding, which will then be filtered down to the villages”.

The DCC team agreed that the main problem of the region has been information dissemination. They maintained that the village level was unaware of the welfare schemes that were due to them and had nowhere to go for understanding. The DCC stated that it was serious in ensuring that the welfare projects will be explained and assistance provided to villagers so that they benefitted from the schemes, which were all meant for them. While the dream for change has been big, however, if the DCC team achieves even half of what it is striving for, the fortunes of the Congress within the region look likely to change.(SP New)
