Shillong, March 12: Replying to the debate on the Governor’s address during the ongoing Assembly session, Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today dismissed allegations that there was deterioration in law and order situation due to militancy in the state.
“Today, are we not in a better situation? Yes, we have this problem (militancy),” Mukul told the Assembly.
“The matter (militancy) is of concern, but the problem has not happened overnight. We have gone through unpleasant situations over the years,” he said.
According to the Chief Minister, the situation has now improved, compared to a decade ago when militants would come and attack police personnel in the state capital.
However, the Chief Minister has stated that Meghalaya has not been able to free itself from the mushrooming of militant outfits even as he said that many youths join insurgent groups for the sake of earning easy money.
Chief Minister made the statement while replying to the debate on the Governor’s address during the ongoing Assembly session while adding that the problem of militancy did not happen overnight and the state has seen a situation when militants used to kill people openly and they used to roam with guns.
“Root cause of militancy is complex and it requires concentrated efforts from all concerned,” Sangma said even as he admitted that the State Government has not been able to provide the required support to police.
Stating that the State Government is using highly sophisticated intelligence, Sangma said that the State Government is working in complete synergy with other agencies.
Chief Minister also blamed the militant outfits for planning the conspiracy of Garo Rabha clash in the year 2011 and he stated there was involvement of militant outfit to create ethnic strife so that forces involved in counter insurgency can be withdrawn and deployed in the disturbed areas, adding that similar conspiracy was made to create strife between Garos and people of plains when a girl was molested in Tura.(SP News)
