Guwahati, May 30: The Prime minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh today was elected by the Assam congress for the fifth term as a Rajya Sabha member. Dr Singh got 49 votes . The prime minister who is 80, has represent Assam in the Rajya Sabha for the last 21 years since 1991
Another congress candidate Mr Santius Kujur, who filled the second seat got 45 votes and was declare elected as member of Rajya Sabha from Assam while his opponent AIUDF candidate Aminul Islam got 18 votes.
Amidst all speculation and dissidents in the congress that over and over reported in the media, the congress today united to help win both the candidates, Though there was no problem with the candidature of Dr. Manmohan Singh, even with the AIUDF.
After declearation of the result Mr Santius Kujur, was greeted by the cogress MLA,s and ministers after his win keeping aside their differences.
Earlier the Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, after casting his vote,in a Press conference, said that there would not be slightest problem for both the candidates to win. The AGP, and the BJP did not took part in the election sighting that there was no acceptable candidate.
Mr Santius Kujur, after winning said that he was happy and that would work for the progress of the state.Thevoting process started at 9 am and the result was decleared at around 5 pm. The cogress MLA,s were given three line whip by the party against anti party activity while voting.(SP News)
