Durga Puja Celebrations end on a high, no incidents of any kind reported in Garo Hills

Tura, Oct 14 : After four days of fun and laughter, coupled with devotion and pandal hopping, the annual Durga Puja celebration in Tura came to an end after the immersion of the idols at Babupara today. The four days passed by without any form of incidents reported from the town of Tura or its neighbouring areas and the only thing heard over four days was the sound of ‘dhaks’ and devotional songs.

Security had been heightened following the demands of ILP, but the same had been suspended over the past few days to allow for the annual celebration, which has become a part of the edifice of the town itself. The festival has transcended religion with, Hindus, Christian, Muslims and every other religion that is now a part of the firmament of Tura joining in the chorus of celebrations.

The number of Pujas increased by one this year, with the count being 22 from 21 last year. The latest Puja celebration included Lower Dobasipara Durga Puja Committee as the latest puja in the town. The immersions were led by the Nepali Mandir Durga Puja Committee which celebrated 128 years of celebrations. Along with them, the main puja attractions were the Milan Sangha on Parade Ground, the Marwari Durga Puja and the Der Mile Durga Puja committee, whose enthusiastic immersion crowd got everyone impressed. Along with them, the Ananda Math Durga Puja and the Natya Samity Club too took the honours for the day.

The Central Puja Committee, which has been in the forefront of the arrangements for the Puja, were ecstatic at the success of the event. The General Secretary of the CPC, Arup Nag said, “We are really thankful to all our Garo and Muslim brothers, who joined our celebrations. They have shown that our society is truly cosmopolitan. The District Administration of WGH and the DC, Pravin Bakshi, along with the SP, Mukesh Singh, deserves a special thank you for the safe and secure conduct of the Pujas this year. While we were apprehensive about the situation, they have ensured nothing wrong that could happen, happened”.

Another EM of the CPC, Pranab Bhowmick, spoke of the essence of the Pujas to the people of the town. He said, “The defeat of evil by good is the essence of the Pujas and the celebration is for the same. The Pujas bring hope to so many people of the region as we keep waiting for these four days to celebrate. We forget all our pains to be with our family and friends and ensure that our company gives comfort to the people we care about”.

The immersion process started at about 12:30 pm and ended at about 7 pm in the evening and started from the Parade Ground, snaking through the whole town before reaching the immersion ghat in Babupara. More than 10 thousand citizens of Tura thronged the streets of the town to see the spectacle that everyone waits for in Tura. Though traffic was slow, no one really minded as the carnival festival atmosphere engulfed everyone. (SP News)
