Shillong, 24 April: As part of Earth Day celebration, the District Administration, South West Khasi Hills District in collaboration with the Office of the Divisional Forest Officer, Social Forestry Division, Nongstion organised an Awareness Programme relating to critical catchment area of Wahsala stream on 22nd at Mawkyrwat where members of the Wahsala Catchment committee and District Officials took part.
The Awareness programme in the form of skit was performed by the members of the Kynhun Biria u Maram (KBUM) highlighted on how human being uncared to the stream by throwing the waste etc into the river stream without considering the consequences that the future generation might be facing. At the end, the members of the Kynhun Biria u Maram appealed to all people that the catchment area of Wahsala stream need to be protected and preserve for clean drinking water. Meanwhile the Ionglajong Musical and Cultural Organisation were also presented a special item relating to preservation of Wahsala stream.
While speaking as the chief guest, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr A.Mawlong stated that
catchment area of Wahsala stream would be protected adding that the Government has taken the
initiative to acquire the greenery forest land across the river stream so that people which
were getting drinking water from this stream will not suffer in future.
Stressing on the need for proper maintenance and preservation of the stream, Mr Mawlong, also
expressed his hope that integrated schemes from Water Resource Department as well as from
Block Development Office, Mawkyrwat will be implemented for maintenance and preservation of Wahsala stream. He also called upon all the stake holders, the youth and particularly the
students to come forward to cooperate with the Government in protecting and cleaning the river
stream for conservation of water for the future generation.
Other who spoke on the occasion included the Mr R.Shullai IFS, Chief Conservator Territorial,
Forest and Environment, Meghalaya Shillong who is also the Guest of honour at the function,
the Conservator of Forest, Social Forestry and Environment Mr A.Lyngdoh IFS and the Divisional Forest Officer, Social Forestry Division, West Khasi Hills District, Nongstoin Mr T.Wanning.(SP News)
