Shillong, May 29: For the first time in history, Meghalaya won 26 medals in the National Games for the Deaf, organized by the All India Council of Deaf at Aurangabad The students of Ferrando Speech and Hearing Centre, Ri Bhoi representing the state of Meghalaya participated in athletics events Differently abled children from 25 states of India participated in the competition. This feat was possible only with the help from Army Madras Regiment
It all started with Ferrando Speech and Hearing Centre, Umniuh-Khwan, Ri-Bhoi, Meghalaya requesting Army Madras Regiment to train their students for the various sports events, The rehabilitation centre is an Early Intervention, Education and Rehabilitation Centre for the disabled children of North Eastern Region. Many of their students who are handicapped in terms of speech and hearing were found to be potentially good in sports.
The Army regiment held a Coaching camp for 15 students of Ferrando Speech and Hearing Centre for a month in December. Coaching was planned to facilitate these students to enable them to participate in Silent Olympiad at Mumbai and the national games at Aurangabad.This is the first time ever that students from Ferrando Speech and Hearing Centre Ri Bhoi have won so many medals at the national level and will be representing the country at the Olympics for the Deaf at Bulgaria.
The centre expressed its gratitude to MADRAS Regiment for assisting them to achieve this unprecedented feat wherein dedicated coaching and other related facilities were provided by the Army. A felicitation ceremony in this regard was organized by FSHC The winners of gold and silver medals will now be participating in the Olympics for Deaf in Bulgaria.
The Army has volunteered for further assistance in training of the students. Commander of Mountain Brigade at Umroi Military Station under the aegis of Red Horn Division highlighted said “we consider ourselves privileged to have helped these children to achieve this remarkable feat. We as an organization are committed to the people of our country and we will be happy to continue our support to these students. I am sanguine that, these kids will do wonders in Bulgaria Olympics and do Meghalaya and India proud.” (SP News)
