Tura, May 19: It was pure passion for learning Bangla, which forced
young Subhendu Karmakar to change his School at Class 7. He was
admitted to Tura Town Higher Secondary School, where his father Indu
Bhusan Karmakar teaches economics and geography.
Subhendu has brought laurels to his School and his proud parents by
securing second position in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate
examination, 2014 (Class 10), results declared today by the Meghalaya
Board of Secondary School Education, Tura.
He attributed his success to his supportive parents, teachers, tutors
and friends. “There is no short cut to success, dedication and
hard-work is the key. My mother and tutor helped me to master
mathematics”, said Subhendu. He obtained 98 marks in mathematics.
He used to spend 6 to 7 hours daily with an objective to secure good
marks. His father said, “We were confident that he will secure good
position. I feel very happy and comfortable with the outcome”.
An ardent sports lover, he plays cricket and football. He has secured
distinction in all subjects with a total of 567 out of 600 marks, 100
in Health Education and 90 in Bangla.
“He was keen to learn Bangla, so we changed his School. As teacher of
Tura Town School, I got him admitted, where he could take up Bangla.
He gave extra effort to learn Bangla and Rabindra Sangeet”, said
Subhendu’s father, who is also the assistant headmaster of the School.
Subhendu, 15 years old, aspires be an astrophysicist. “I have always
been motivated by Albert Einstein and his theory of relativity, one of
the two pillars of modern physics”.
“I love watching discovery science channel. It gives me knowledge and
insight about physical properties of celestial bodies”, he added.
Topper Dristhi De of Sherwood School Tura, who secured 5th position by
obtaining 562 marks with distinction in all subjects, was overwhelmed
with her performance. She has obtained 100 marks in health education
and 90 in Hindi.
A passionate young girl, Dristhi loves reading books on religion and
draws inspiration from her parents – Jayatosh De and Joymoti De. Her
father heads department of chemistry at Don Bosco College, Tura. Her
mother is a senior sub-divisional engineer, BSNL.
“I have acquired a lot of information on different religion, their
history, origin and culture”, said Dristhi adding, “I am fascinated
with Indian history, freedom fighters and love to read on the subject
a lot”. She loves to watch TV serials like Mahadev, Laxmi Bai, etc.
She aspires to be scientists and would take up research after
completing her engineering. For now, she would continue her Class
XI-XII at a college in Tura.
She has attributed her success to constant motivation from her
parents, friends and teachers. Her distant great grandfather,
Amarendra Dutta Choudhury was a student of Albert Einstein at Boston
University.
She says that regular studies are the key to crack any examination. “I
was never forced by my parents to study. They have always been like my
good friends, guiding me for my studies”, said Dristhi.
Six students from Sherwood School Tura have secured positions in the
top 20 category, including Dristhi and Jeremy M. Sangma. They are –
Shreya Bhattacharjya 6th position, Aditya Kumar 10th position, Saahil
Gajmer 18th position and Arnav Saha 20th position.
Jeremy is a very confident young boy. He loves music, reading
newspaper and watching news on TV. He says, “I keep myself updated
with news from around the globe”. He has secured 17th position with a
total of 546 marks, and distinction in all subjects.
“I feel Narendra Modi will do something for the country. The verdict
is for a change”, said 16 years old Jeremy.
“I was an average student till Class IX. My teachers constantly
instilled in me the confidence to look forward. I drew inspiration
from School toppers and prepared myself accordingly. My parents have
been a constant motivation”, said Jeremy.
Jeremy feels that it is very important to be through with all subjects
to secure good marks. “I prepared thoroughly for my exams. I did not
think I will get position, but I was confident about good marks”, said
Jeremy, who aspires to be a neurologist.
Allegra T. Sangma of St. Xavier’s School, Tura secured 19th position
with a total of 544 marks and distinction in five subjects, out of
six.
The total pass percentage of Meghalaya is 54.31 percent, of which the
five districts of Garo hills managed to obtain a pass percentage of
