foreign object removal from a three year old child at Supercare Hospital

Shillong, May 26: In what can be called as the rarest amongst the rare cases in the medical history of the state is when an alkaline battery used for Operating Radio Set stuck inside the aesophagus of a three year old child was removed by a team of doctors at pynforeign5Super Case Hospital on Friday.

“There has been several cases where a person was found swallowing foreign object such as safety pins, coins, bones and others but this is the first case that someone will swallow a battery,” Dr Rangkynsan Thangkhiew MD, Supercare Hospital said while talking to reporters here on Saturday.

Dwelling further about the strange incidence Dr Thangkhiew said that the rounded but flat battery went inside the aesophagus of the child and had to be immediately removed as the alkaline solution that was inside the battery had already leaked.

“Alkaline batteries are much more harmful rather than the acid batteries,” Dr Thangkhiew informed.

Further he said that as the battery has been inside the child’s aesophagus for more than hours, the alkalie started leaking and as a result had even corroded the inside part of the aesophagus in which the portion has become black and white.

“What worst can happen if not treated properly, the child might even get ulcer because of the damage cause by the alkaline from the battery,” Dr Thangkhiew said adding that the child might even have problem swallowing anything in future and might even have to go for major operation.

However, he said that as the battery had been removed and treatment has been given, the child’s health condition  is stabilized but still under observation.

While informing about the foreign object removal process, Dr Thangkhhiew informed that he along with Dr Danny Hek conducted the endoscopic removal and it was a success.

On the other hand Dr Thangkhiew precautioned to see that no child be allowed to play with any such kinds of objects as it is hazardous.

Meanwhile, talking to the father of the patient Kitbok Kharshandy from Khlieh Umwang in Ri Bhoi district near  Assam border, it was told that no one from his house knew that the child had swollwed the battery but until the child himself complain of chest pain and soon after that the child was taken to NEIGRIHMS hospital the same day.

“On reaching he hospital all hopes are gone when it was learnt that NEIGRIHMS cannot provide treatment,” Kharshandy said.

Besides, he also informed that the hospital kept the child for one night and the next day he was released and referred to Super Care in which on the same day the removal was done. (SP News)
