Shillong, Sept 18: In view of the rampant display of hoardings on trees all over the city, the Forest Department has contemplated issuing an order to the effect that the
practice is stopped immediately.
Many institutions and business houses nail their advertisement boards on the trees thereby not only defacing but also ruining them.
“The trees look so beautiful but the human race just for monetary benefit they will go to all extent to destroy them,” said a passerby who saw this reporter taking photographs of the hoardings on trees at Lachaumere.
Many others who spoke with this reporter expressed their anguish that hoardings particularly at Barik Point have become an eyesore as they are covering up the trees.
Sources in the Forest Department said that although there have been many complaints from concerned citizens, nothing could be done officially as there is no law to prevent hoardings.
“However,” the source told SP Newsagency, “the department is bound to protect the trees and the environment so we will go on that angle and hence ban all hoardings from hanging on trees.”
Naba Bhattacharjee, an environmentalist said, “There should be designated areas for hoardings. Hoardings every way has made the beauty of Shillong very ugly.”(SP News)
