Shillong, Feb 1: Frequent road accidents caused due to careless driving which also goes hand in hand with the road condition.
Interestingly in most of the cases it was always found that drivers were held responsible. Driving cramped, distorted, worn out night buses and most of the driver were found drunk while they drive those vehicles. This is what the commuters are experiencing travelling in buses plying through National Highway -44 from Guwahati to barrack valley.
Expressing concerned over drunken driving which passengers encounter in many occasions , R Choudhury said, “Though we are concerned yet we cannot do anything, It is nothing new. The drivers drink when they stop for dinner”, adding that no matter how much concerned we will be but we can’t do anything, a concerned passenger said.
Like Choudhury, many others feel unsafe taking the bus ride and hopes that lessons are learnt from past instances.
Twenty three passengers lost their precious life on 8 August 2012, when the Tripura bound bus from Guwahati fell into a gorge after the driver lost control of the bus. Yet another Guwahati bound bus mishap that occurred on January 28 this year, killed three individuals and left 33 injured.
Numerous accidents have occurred in this stretch and very little done to address it , perhaps the phrase, ‘Have a safe journey,’ is much understood by an individual who has survived the near death experience in a number of live taking crashes the buses were involved.(SP News)
