Tura, Sept 22:  The dreaded militant outfit, GNLA has called for a two day bandh in Garo Hills on the 25th and 26th of the month. The bandh call has been called allegedly due to increased police operations against the outfit in the South West Garo Hills region.

Incidents of killings have been reported from the Garobadha region which falls under the SWGH region with 2 killings, one man and a woman, recently in the area. The bandh by the GNLA is set to be from 5 am in the morning to 4 pm in the evening on both days.

The group is also said to have demanded the unconditional release of the 25 GHSMC activists who have been lodged in jail since the 11th of September. The statehood demand activists were arrested for barging into the office of the DC on the 10th of September. There has been an increased activity against the outfit since the killing of two civilians allegedly by the group a few days ago from Oidoba, near Garobadha.

The SP of SWGH, R Muthu, confirmed the increase in activities of the militants in an area where such activities were earlier minimal. He also said that police operations have been increased recently. Sources said the increased vigilance has come in the wake of the killings of two innocent people from the Oidoba near Garobadha allegedly by the militants.

The outfit has also been allegedly sending demand notes to all and sundry and off late the increased police vigil has resulted in a lot of arrests of people either directly or indirectly related to the group.

Sources said the increased militant group wants its list of demands to be met by the Government as well as a decrease in police activities against the group.  They are also demanding withdrawal of central forces from the state of Meghalaya and operations against the group. The group also lambasted the Government for not listening to their demands.(SP News)
