Govt of Meghalaya implement the SC Ruling on the used of red light

Shillong, March 10: The Government of Meghalaya on the 7th of this month has come out with the notification implementing the Supreme Court ruling dated 10.12.2013 who is entitle to put the red light on top of their official vehicles.

In compliance with the Order dated 10.12.2013 passed by the Hon’b1e Supreme Court in Petition for Special Leave t o. appeal (civil) No(s)25237/2010- Abhay Sing the petitioners (s) vs State of Uttar Pradesh & Others.. .Respondent(s) read with the’ powers conferred under clause tiii) of the Proviso to Sub-Rule (1) of Rule 108 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 the State government  is here by pleased to specify that a red light of a bulb not more than seven watt power, may be fified on the roof top of the following categories of category of vehicles of respective dignitaries.

The principal secretary of the government of Meghalaya in charge transport Department Mr Y.Tsering in the government notification has categories only twenty official in the state of Meghalaya who could fitted red light in their official vehicles which include. The Governor the Chief Minister. Deputy Chief Ministers. Chief Justice of High Court of Meghalaya. Speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Cabinet Ministers, Chairman, Planning Board, Former Chief Minister. Leaders of opposition in Meghalaya legislative Assembly, Judges of High Court of Meghalaya. Deputy Speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Ministers of State of Meghalaya.  Deputy Ministers of Meghalaya. Chief Secretary, dvocate General Of Meghalaya and Chairman, Meghalaya Public Service Commission.

The notification said that   any vehicle carrying  the dignitary formally designated as equivalent in rank, status and privileges to those dignitaries referred to above shall be entitled to use red light as per corresponding privileges.

The vehicles carrying the dignitaries assigned rank in their personal capacities by the State Government shall be entitled to use a red light as per the corresponding privileges assigned to those dignitaries referred to above. In case the vehicle fitted with red light on top  is not carrying the dignitaries, then such red light shall not be used and be cover with black cover.

 The  dignitaries who are entitle to used the red light may fit shuch light on their official vehicles and-not on their private vebicle (s).

The men in uniform, operational agencies which required un-hindered access to the roads for performance of their duty; those engaged in emergency duties such as ambulance services, fire services,  emergency maintenance etc. and police vehicles used as escorts or pilots or for law and order duties shall not be entitled to have red lights but lights of other colours, e.g. blue, white, multi-colored etc after obtaining the approval of competent authority.

All other unauthorised persons using such red light in their vehicles shall be liable to be persecuted as per provisions of law. This notification shall supersede all previous notification issued in this regard. This will take effect immediately said the government order.(SP News)
