HANM president clarified against the allegation level aginst him

Shillong, August 16: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) president Lamphrang Kharbani today has clarified on the allegation that he demanded the pleasure of an adolescent girl after which he was arrested by the police based on a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the girl’s sister.

Kharbani told media persons this afternoon that the woman who filed the FIR against him was the president of the HANM Women’s Wing known as Aidalyne Nongrum but had changed her name to Suzzane Nongrum when filling the FIR.

In the FIR it was alleged that Kharbani had asked Nongrum to allow her younger sister to ‘enjoy’ with him.

“Why would I want to do such a thing when I am holding the position of a president of a reputable organization?” Kharbani asked, while briefing newsmen at the Shillong Press Club.

The HANM president, who was in police lockup for 41 days, said, “Obviously it is an allegation to malign me and the organization that I am leading because she owes me Rs 1.5 lac and when I demanded back the money and sacked her from the organization she threatened me with dire consequences.”

Kharbani said that Nongrum had borrowed the money from him for utilizing it for the Women’s Wing but when it was discovered that she had misused the money and no account record was available the HANM central body demanded her immediate resignation.

“At that time then Suzzane Nongrum threatened to punish me by all means,” Kharbani said.

Another HANM member questioned the role that the police played in this case as they had made it extremely difficult for Kharbani to get bail

“We have tried 6 times for the bail but in vain so as in other case of rape the culprit get scot free while our president is held for more than a month without bail,” the member said.(SP News)
