Shillong, July 31: The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Umiam in collaboration with the Inner Wheel Club of Shillong and the Meghalaya Youth Foundation (MYF) conducted a distribution program of Livestock to the farmers of Mawpyrshong Village, East Khasi Hills District.
Addressing the gathering, Senior Scientist from Soil Division, Dr Hazarika said that the projects that are being conducted at Mawpyrshong village falls under Tribal Sub Plan which is meant to help farmers increase their productivity.
Meanwhile Dr Hazarika urged the farmers to avail the assistance that ICAR will be providing to them from time to time be it in the form of materials or technical assistance.
Assuring to give all the necessary assistance to the farmers Dr Hazarika said “If the villagers follow the guidelines that ICAR instructed to them, their economic conditions and livelihood will increase.”
Among others who spoke was Dr Kadirvel, who narrated many success stories of the farmers who received livestock in 2011, in which they were able to earn handsome amount of money from piggery hence urges the farmers to be sincere in their animal rearing activity as this can really boost their economic condition.
“The farmers should take precaution against animal diseases by giving them proper vaccination and also by feeding them well,” suggested Dr Kadervel.
Dr KP Mohapatra, Senior Scientist of Forestry Division in his speech gave a brief insight about the importance of aforestation in the village giving emphasis on growing trees in the cultivated land and fields.
“The reason as to why trees should be grown in the fields is due to the fact that they retain the fertility of the soil as well as they help retain moisture,” Dr KP Mohapatra said adding, “Growing trees is like investing money in the bank for future use, therefore to have long term investment, trees should be grown.”
Renowned Scientists of ICAR Dr Samar Hazarika (Senior Scientist Soil Division), Dr G Kadirvel (Senior Scientist of Animal Production), Dr KP Mohapatra (Senior Scientist of Forestry Division) and Dr. Ramkrushna (GI Scientist of Agronomy Division) were present on the day.(SP News)
