Shillong, Jan 9: The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, crossed another milestone in its journey by celebrating its 38th Foundation day at ICAR Institute Barapani on Wednesday.
The institute started its journey on January 9, 1975 from a rented house at Laban (Amrit Bhavan) in Shillong.
Speaking at the occasion, Director ICAR-RC-NEH- Umiam said, “Though we are deficient in major areas of various crop productions in the region; our strength lies in taking benefits of tribal farmer-led innovative farming technologies”.
Besides, he further added that the institute is advancing fast in core areas of farming systems in the entire north east region. Yet their use is still limited to certain parts of the region thereby stressing on the need for effective extension mechanism to go further to reach far-flung villages across the region.
Lauding the efforts of the farmers who march in towards self sufficiency in food dr D Daniel Ingty Dirextor, Horticulture, Government of Meghalaya while speaking at the occasion as the chief guest encouraged the farmers to be more informative for the betterment of their farming.
He further highlighted that ICAR and State line departments are seriously concerned about farmers’ welfare, and as a team were ready to help farmers do their bests to improve their livelihood.Besides during the occasion, outstanding employees of various categories of Institute were honored.
Meanwhile, during the celebrations, a technology showcasing coordinated by Mass Media project (NAIP) was also organized. As a part of the technology delivery programme seeds of high-yielding crop varieties were distributed to the farmers.(SP News)
