India has a very large number of disabled persons: Aimol

 

Shillong, March 8: The Composite Regional Centre (CRC) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India in collaboration with MEPAD and SSA distributed hearing aids, wheel chairs, visual aid and crutches to the person with disabilities at Malki Basic School on Friday

Speaking at the occasion, Lanu W Aimol, Assistant Professor Speech and Hearing from CRC said that such initiatives are very essential for the social, economic and vocational rehabilitation of the disabled persons.

“Various surveys conducted from time to time have made it clear that India has a very large number of disabled persons,” Aimol said adding that many of them come from low-income groups. Disability restricts their opportunities for leading functionally productive lives.

He also said that all the aids are being given under the Kushabhan Thakre Scheme.

“The scheme aims at helping the disabled persons by bringing suitable, durable, scientifically-manufactured, modern, standard aids and appliances within their reach and making it convenient in their day-today lives,” Aimol said.

State Commissioner for Disability, C Kharkongor said that it is a very good initiative.

“We from the state would like to join hands with CRC and MEPAD again in the future to bring better facilities to persons suffering with disabilities,” Kharkongor said.

Altogether 166 hearing aids, 18 wheel chairs, 1 crutch and 47 visual aids where distributed to the beneficiaries.

Also present in the occasion were Rajesh Kumar, Special Educator (CRC), Manoj Kumar, Prostatic and Aerostatic Engineer (CRC), Marylang Kharbyngar State IED Co-ordinator and Belbora Wankar, General Secretary MEPAD besides others.

Shillong, March 8: The State Department of Social Welfare in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Commission for Women & Partner NGOs celebrated International Women’s Day on Friday at Umlyngka Community hall on Friday.

During the celebration emphasis is being laid on the theme–The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum .

Speaking at the occasion as the chief guest, chief Secretary WMS Pariat said that in Meghalaya women are treated are far better than those in other parts of the country and the social indicators such as sex ratio, literacy, health percentage is higher than men.

He however, lamented on the increase of crimes against women while stating that it is time to tackle and solve this problem. “There is a need to inculcate the moral values among the young generation to uphold the social values that the society in our State follows”, he said.

He also expressed his gladness that at women has come forward to take part in politics while referring to the four elected women representatives who will sit in the Legislative Assembly which is the first time in the history of the State.

He also urged upon the parents particularly the mothers to counsel and guide their children since it is the need of the hour to bring the youngsters in the right way and this has to start from the family.

Besides, several other Women NGO’s of the state organised various programmes in different parts of the state.

This day was also celebrated with a week-long programme by Rotary Club of Orchid city and North east Network at Shillong Club here on Friday with an aim to sensitize the society on elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls at the same time, to create a society which is safe and secure for the feminine gender.(SP News)
