Shillong, Aug 6: In its efforts to spread awareness on the need to preserve and conserve the environment, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) NE Ftr Shillong in collaboration with forest department of Shillong organized a tree plantation drive at 3 mile area on Tuesday.
Emphasising on the need to preserve and conserve the environment by planting trees R K Saini, IG NE Ftr ITBP, brought out the importance of increasing the green cover in Shillong by integrating the forces into this pious duty towards the society.
Addressing the gathering Saini informed that Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has been protecting the Flora and Fauna in the areas of their deployment all over the country especially in the Himalayan region.
He also informed that since ITBP has no land of its own in Shillong, the force requested the department of forest and environment to provide some area for tree plantation in and around Shillong city.
Besides, he also stated that ITBP would like to continue with the initiative in the form of adopting community land for plantation of variety of trees and taking care of the same.
Principal secretary P B O Warjri lauded the initiative of the ITBP for taken up steps and come forward to address the global issue of environment. He also highlighted the need to increase the forest quality and density by covering the gaps with variety of plants.
T T C Marak, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, while expressing gratitude to the ITBP for its initiative elaborated on the characteristics of the trees and their role in soil conservation in the area He also highlighted the efforts being made by the department of Forest and Environment Govt of Meghalaya towards improving the quality of forest cover in the state.
It was also learnt that more than 400 saplings of variety of plants was planted during the tree plantation programme so as to ensure ecological balance and green cover in Shillong area.(SP News)
