Janmashtami observed in the capital city Shillong

Shillong, August 28: Along with the other parts of India, Shillong on Wednesday revelled in the spirit of Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, as devotees, unperturbed by the humid weather, fasted, feasted and prayed at several brightly decked-up temples to mark the festivities.

Men, women and children of all ages thronged the temples of the city decorated with banana leaves, flowers and colorful fancy lights since morning.

The hub of celebrations remained popular temples like in Police Bazzar, Rynjah, Oakland road, and Garikhana and in many other localities.

In the puja mandap at Oakland Road, Sanbor Shullai the Deputy Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly graced the occasion as chief guest and witnessed the cultural program of the evening.

The festival is celebrated across the whole country for two days with dramatic play Ras Lila and Dahi Handi. People also fast during this festival, which is also called Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami.(SP News)

Rasa Lila is a dramatic play depicting the story of Krishna as described in Hindu scriptures. Ras Lila is a special feature in Janmashtami and is performed especially in the UP regions of Mathura, believed to be the birth place of Lord Krishna, and Vrindavan.(SP News)
