Jenita Mary Nongkynrih an ISRO Young Scientists Awardee for the year 2011

 

 

Shillong, June 15: To honour the achievement of Jenita Mary Nongkynrih an ISRO Young Scientists Awardee for the year 2011, a felicitation ceremony was organised by the Seng Bhalang ki Longkmie Mawlai Mawroh and Mawlai MLA/MDC Embhah at Mawlai Mawroh Community hall on Saturday.

Nongkynrih has lift up the name of the state and the community as a whole as she emerged as the first woman from the state to receive this prestigious award.

The award was conferred to Nongkynrih for her  contribution to the project on National Urban Information System-10K for the NE region as the Principal Investigator

A resident of Mawlai Mawroh, Nongkynrih is a daughter of (L) C Myrthong and A Nongkynrih. She is a wife of OT Lyngwa.

She has done her primary schooling from St John Bosco Girl’s High School, Cherrapunjee, Secondary schooling from St. Mary’s HS School, and also completed her graduation from St. Mary’s College, Shillong before obtaining a Masters in Geography from NEHU.

At present she is working as a Scientist at the North Eastern Space Applications Centre, Umiam. She joined NESAC as a junior research fellow in NESAC in 2002 and became a scientist in 2004. She is specialized in Urban Studies, Natural Resources Management and Disaster Management.

Delivering her speech at the felicitation cermony, Nongkynrih expressed her gratitude to her family members who have always been her greatest strength.

Referring her mother as her best tutor, Nongkynrih said, “It was her who taught me how to hold a chalk and write an alphabet A in a blackboard” while terming her 5 siblings as ‘her strongest pillars’.

Citing the difficulties while conducting her research all over the north east, Jenita said road connectivity was the main problem for them at the same time, referred to insecurity as a challenge for the scientist to conduct their work in the sensitive parts of the region.

Congratulating the young scientist for her achievement, Mawlai MLA/MDC Embhah Syiemlieh said Nongkynrih is a perfect example for the youth of the state to strive towards excellence and perseverance. “You are a role model not only for the youth of the state but the region and the country as a whole,” he said.

Lauding the achievements of Nongkynrih, Home Minister Roshan Warjri, also a resident of Mawroh said, “We are proud to have a woman of her stature and wisdom in our midst and the state needs more women like her to excel in every sphere,” she added.

Upholding the role of a woman in Matrilineal Meghalaya as ‘imperative’, Warjri said “The role of a woman in society is very important. At present, where women are seen excelling in every field of work, it is also important to note that she is also a home-maker who can bring the family together.”

The gathering was also attended by Jenita’s huband and her family members besides the Rangbah Shnong of Mawlai Mawroh AS Lyngdoh, President of the Seng Longkmie Mawroh S Hynniewta, President of the Seng Samla Mawroh HBR Lyngdoh and other members of the Dorbar Shnong.(SP News)
