Shillong, April 4: In remembrance of the supreme sacrifice made by the legendry freedom fighter U Tirot Singh who sacrifice his life for the cause of the nation and took 
up his fight on April 4, 1829 against the British to do away with their rule, the Khasi Students Union organised the Khasi National Awakening Day with an aimed to awaken the people of the state especially the youth to stand up and follow his footsteps and to evoke the patriotic spirit and sacrifice for the cause of the people in this land.
The day also coincides with the foundation day of the Khasi 35 years back. To mark the history day of the Khasi a rally was organised a rally from Madan Iew Rynghep and culminated at parking lot Motphran.
Amonsgst the Khasi’s April 4 was marked as a historic day as this was the day when U Tirot Singh Syiem Chief of Hima Nongkhlaw started his fight against the British regime in the Khasi land.
Thousand of young and old people joined hands together and come out in public with torch in hands marched along the city streets besides shouting slogans to awaken the spirit of the Khasi people. Besides ex-members of the Union, local NGO’s , KHADC members took part actively in the rally.
Talking to SP News President of the Khasi Student’s Union Daniel Khyriem informed that the Union is all out to stand up and fight for the right of the people.
Besides, he also lamented over the rising crimes against women and children though being a matrilinial sociey.
However, he said that the Union as a whole supported the women’s organisation who work day in and day out to remove the atrocities from the socity.(SP News)
