Jowai March 08: Dr J.N. Shullai Project Director of Mihmyntdu Community Social Welfare Association (MCSWA) speaking as the main speaker on the celebration of the International Women’s Day (IWD) at H.K. Singh School, Jowai said that we have laws to protect right of the women in place but women are yet to make the best used of the laws.
Lamenting on the slow progress of trial on many rape cases in the district, Dr Shullai said that even cases which was referred to fast track court and the honourable court is yet to deliver its verdict in spite of the lapsed of many years. This includes rape cases which involved minor victim, Dr Shullai also said that there should be some organization to help the victim and their family to ensure that justice is delivered and as of now there is no support system for the victim and their families, she said.
At a function to celebrate IWD which was organized by Seng Kynthei Unitarian Church, Jowai (Women Wings of the Church), Dr. Shullai whose organization was involved in working with destitute women, call upon the Women of the Unitarian Church to come out of the four corner of the church and take up women issues to protect the rights of women folk in the region. Dr Shullai called upon the Women of the Church to be pro-active as there are many areas which involve protection of women rights that needs to be addressed.
Speaking on the occasion Rev. H.H.Mohmen made women and girls present at the function to be aware of their rights and called upon those present to exert their rights. Earlier in her opening remark Riehtngen Shylla Chariperson of the Seng Kynthei briefly narrated the history of the celebration of the International Women’s Day and reminded the gathering of the theme of this year celebration of the IWD “ A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women.” The meeting was started with traditional lighting of a candle to remember all those who are victims of crime against women and those who fought for women’s rights. Other who spoke on the occasion was Yeema Pakma and Neinihiwot Passah invoked a blessing.
On the occasion of Women Day many function where held in different parts of the state and specially in the Capital Shillong in all the function various speakers said that laws that protected women need to be enforce strictly. (SP News)
