Shillong, Feb 15: The Congress party are running their campaign in full swing before the onset of the coming assembly election slated for February 23.
Strengthening their campaign Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh made his visit to the capital city of state today to set the people’s mood and draw their attention to vote for the Congress party in the coming assembly polls.
During the one-day visit of the Prime Minister, a Congress election rally was conducted at 5th ground of JN Sports Complex.
It may be mentioned here that the coming of the top political leader of the country the Prime Minister to the city, was to garner and to stregnthen the support for the party in the state.
Addressing the congress rally in Shillong, Singh said that the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre has always recognized the special needs of the North East, which has been receiving three to four times more Central assistance.
The UPA has been working hard for inclusive development of not only the North East but all states and communities of the country, especially the backward, scheduled tribes and castes, he said. Heaping praises on the Congress-led government in the state, Singh, who was flanked by chief minister Mukul Sangma on the dais, certified the state government for having delivered “transparent governance” and having “utilized well” the resources made available to it “under various flagship programmes of the Congress”.
“However, much more still needs to be done,” he admitted and urged the electorate of the state to make their choice after “careful consideration” and vote for his party to ensure that the “good work” done by the Congress-led government in Meghalaya could continue to progress at a faster pace and the “immense potential” of the people, especially the youth is realized.
The Congress election rally was attended by AICC leaders, the Chief Minister, MPCC chief , senior leaders and Congress candidates besides thousands of Congress supporters from various parts of the city also attended the rally.
