Tura, 25th Oct: Frustrated at the slow pace of development and the terrible road conditions within their colony, the residents of Matchakolgre in Tura took up the onus of road repair by themselves. While one half of the road was done towards April this year, the remaining part has not been touched. The residents have been at the receiving end of the problems the road creates as vehicles move at a snail’s pace through the road.
The concerned residents started their work on trying to better the road condition from 9 am in the morning and continued till the late afternoon. The road is generally filled with potholes, some of which are more than two feet deep and vehicular movement becomes hazardous during peak times. To add to the problem, the cars have to wait for one another to cross as two vehicles moving together would ensure a traffic jam.
Soshan Sangma, a resident of the place and also a member of the AYWO spoke of the problems the residents faced on a daily basis and their need to lead by example. He said, “We have waited for more than six months for the PWD department to move, but without any success. This road is a very important one as it connects the AMPT road to Najing Bazar, reducing the distance by about 5 kms. On than consideration, the road should have been well maintained, but nothing has been done to ensure easy transportability. We have thereby been forced to take up the road development and filling of potholes so that the residents are given some relief”.
The residents also had another complaint about the flood situation that happens due to a blocked drain. The drain has been another bane for them as the clogging has meant the water flowed on to the road and not only destroyed it caused a lot of unhappiness. According to sources, the amount for the repair of the road has already been sanctioned, but work is yet to complete.
With the citizens now taking steps to rectify what should have been departmental in nature, the mantle is now on the PWD to prove they are serious on road repairs and comfort for the citizens of the place. (SP News)
