Meghalaya and others part of Northeastern States fall under Zone V category

Shillong, March 10: Mr. J. K. Sinha, Member National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), New Delhi while addressing the media at the Conference Room, Deputy Commissioner Office, Shillong informed that the Mega Mock Exercise will be held on 10th March, 2014 as part of the Multi State Mock Exercise on earthquake scenario of Shillong Earthquake of 1897 of magnitude 8.7 on ritcher scale.

He also informed that since Meghalaya and others part of Northeastern States fall under Zone V category and caution that a revisit of the earthquake of such magnitude in the present day context is likely to present a very damaging scenario because of polarization of population in the capital cities and the change in building typology, traditional houses and buildings have been replaced by un-engineered concrete structures.

Mr. Sinha said that the main objective of the exercise is to generate awareness amongst the stakeholders about an earthquake of a high magnitude, to understand the direct and indirect consequences of such an earthquake and to assess earthquake disaster preparedness and identifying the gaps.

Others present includes Mr. P.K. Srivastava, Principal Secretary, and Smti L. Kharkongor, Commissioner and Secretary, Revenue and Disaster Management, Mr. Sanjay Goyal, Deputy Commissioner and Mr. Shri Shivajee Singh, Senior Consultant, NDRF (NDMA). (SP News)
