Shillong, Nov 29: The Meghalaya Government would embark on a programme on some of the rivers in the State to make the waterways suitable for transportation and develop these as trade routes with Bangladesh. The scope of using inland waterways was discussed between the Chief Minister and the World Bank delegation in Shillong which stresses on improving riverine trade with Bangladesh.
A delegation of World Bank today held discussion with the Chief Minister about the need to use the inland waterways of Meghalaya for export and import with neighbouring country of Bangladesh.
Mukul Sangma said the Government will appoint a consultant to work out the details of making inland waterways of Meghalaya for trade and commerce with Bangladesh
Sangma said cost of transport through waterways is one of the cheapest ways of transportation since it costs Rupees eight per metric tonnes for per kilometre while railway costs Rupees thirty and road costs Rupees fifty and its even environment friendly
