Shillong, Dec 28: Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs along with Meghalaya Judo Association as desired by the Honorable Chief Minister of Meghalaya Dr Mukul Sangma will conduct Inter School District Level Coaching cum Demonstration Camp and State Level Competition in Judo discipline from 2nd-17th Dec 2013 starting from Baghmara and Resubelpara to be followed in other district like Williamnagar and Ampati (7th-18th Jan 2014), Tura and Mawkyrwat (21st Jan-1st Feb 2014), Nonfdtoin (4th-15th Deb 2014), Ri Bhoi, Nongpoh (18th-29th Feb 2014), Jowai and Khliehriat (4th-15th March 2014).
Finnaly, State Level Judo Championship will be held in the last part of March 2014 in Shillong with all the judokas who have been training and coached during the above mentioned Coaching cum Demenstration Camps in all the districts of Meghalaya. Judo a weaponless system of self defense and the only martial arts being played in the Olympic Games invites all students, youngsters, sports lovers, chiledren from poor family background, school drop outs aged 9 years above both boys and girls to submit their names to Meghalaya Judo Assocation.
They can also directly submit to the respective District Sports Officers mentioned above so as to enable us to inform you accordingly the venue and place of such camps. Such camps are being conducted free of cost. Judo is the only discipline of martial arts being taken up by the Government of India for popularising and promoting since March 2013 for medal winning at the 2020 Olympic Games.
Foreseeing such potentials, Government of Meghalaya through DSYA is taking up to promote and popularising judo in all the 11 district of Meghalaya w.e.f 2nd Dec 2013. Judo originates from Japan and it was founded by Dr Jigoro Kano, a Japanese jujitsu expert in 1882. It is being introduced in the Olympic since 1964 for men and 1984 for women. Meghalaya women team once qualified for the 33rd National Games in Guwahati in Jan 2007. Sub-junior National Judo Championshop 2007 was also conducted in Shillong (26th-30th Aug 2007) where Ms Martinez Shangpliang bagged Silver medal for the home team.
Another contribution of MJA was in changing the nomenclature of North East Sports Festival to North East Games in 2008 while meeting the parliamentary standing committee in Shillong. It is worthmentioning here that Judo is picking up in North East espacially Manipur. Shri Lorenzo P Warjri (Larry) President and Dipak Mallick General Secretary and Qualified NIS SAI Coach in Judo of MJA were being elected as the Vice President and Joint Secretary of Judo Federation of India respectively on the 4th Aug 2013 in Manipur.
MJA have again been alloted to conduct Junior National Judo Championship 2014 in Shillong due to its track records and good performances in all the National Champinships being held in other state of the country under the auspices of Judo Federation of India. Once again, MJA invites all to join such camps as sports is an agenda now for employment generation and to continue studies in higher levels where bonus marks are being credited to sports persons especially in armed and paramilitary forces and unviersity.(SP News)
