Shillong, May 21, 2014: Along with rest of the country, Meghalaya too observed the 23rd death anniversary of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
It was on this day in 1991, that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a team of Sri Lankan Tamil terrorists and since then May 21 is observed as the Anti-Terrorism Day.
A special gathering was organized at the secretariat wherein the Deputy Chief Minister RC Laloo administered the pledged which focuses on to safeguard national security as they observed the “anti-terrorism day” in commemoration of the service of the late leader.
Speaking at the function, RC Laloo said it is very necessary to make a sustainable effort to get rid of the economic and social scourges on which terrorism breeds as terrorism continues to inflict pain and suffering on people’s lives all over the world.
Laloo further stated that, “We have lost our leaders in the hands of dreadful terrorists as we all know terrorism is a worldwide problem,” adding, “There is a rise of insurgent activities in the North East especially in Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura and also Meghalaya even as he added that people in North East have many grievances and militants are exploiting these grievances to lure youths into their fold.”
The objective behind the observance of Anti-Terrorism Day is to wean away the people from terrorism and violence.(SP News)
