Shillong Dec 5: Meghalaya is all set to generate power using natural gases known as shale gas formed from being trapped within shale formations.
Informing this here on Wednesday at the Conference on ‘Empowering the North East – overcoming challenges in development of the power sector in the NE India’ Meghalaya Power Principal Secretary JP Prakash said “ Shale gas is available in abundance in Meghalaya, the only need is to tap and develop the resource for developmental purpose in power generation.”
While calling on Independent Power Producers Association of India (IPPAI) to explore the possibility for investment in developing ‘Shale Gas’ as a source for boosting up power generation in the state. JP Prakash said that shale gas is very useful when it comes to generating power.
Explaining the merits associated with shale gas, Prakash urged the IPPAI to tie up with private players expert in the subject of shale gas to come and invest.
While commenting on the the number of MOU’s signed in the past by the state government with a view to develop the state’s power potential, Prakash observed, “ Most of the MOU’s signed in the past has not yielded any result.”
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Secretary WMS Pariat extending support to the cause, directed IPPAI to submmit the report of the conference to the state government for examination.
Dwelling on the issue of acquisition of land for setting up of projects, the chief secretary informed that the land for power projects are acquired through the government.(SP News)
