MPHRC urged for Special Anti Superstition Law in the state of Meghalaya

Shillong, August 05: The Meghalaya Peoples Human Rights Council (MPHRC) has strongly demanded the State government to enact a Special Anti-Superstition Law in preventing and eradicating the harmful superstitious and other witch-huntings related beliefs from unscrupulous members of society, who use misinformation and misguidance to misuse these beliefs for their own interests.

“Since there is a rising numbers of superstitions and other witch-hunting violent cases and which many a times are gross human rights abuses, the enactment of a Special Anti-Superstition Law is very important because as a society we have still not changed our outlook towards superstitious and ritualistic practices and we are still stuck with the old belief systems and rituals” said Dino D. G. Dympep, Chairperson, MPHRC.

“Believing in religious practices and having faith in certain religious beliefs though it is part of every citizens fundamental rights but following barbaric and evil rituals is not. Such beliefs need to be changed as it is causing huge damage to the society. People have to be educated against superstitions and enacting an anti superstition law will help in protecting innocent lives and such evil acts should be condemned and discouraged by all section of the society” said MPHRC.

“Meanwhile in the absent of such specific law to deal with such cases, the State Government must set up a Special Cell to deal with the issue and also come up with specific recommendation to put an end to such practices” said MPHRC.(SP News)
