MTTA urge government to provide safety and security to tourist drivers

Shillong, July 3: The Meghalaya Toursist Taxi Association (MTTA) denmande to provide safety and security to tourist taxi drivers besides they have also come up with a decision to take driver’s and passengers identification.

The decision was taken after seeing the rising crime against passengers and drivers boarding tourist taxi’s which also includes the recent kidnapping and murder of one Sameul Mawlong a tourist taxi driver who was murdered on June 24 last.

The kidnapping and brutal murder of a tourist taxi’s driver, Samuel Mawlong and the subsequent arrest of the persons involved recently, has evoked widespread anguish amongst the other tourist taxi drivers of the state under the Meghalaya Tourist Transporter’s Association (MTTA) who demanded the state government to streamline the whole procedure and ensure the safety and security of the fellow drivers.

Demanding an assurance on their security, the MTTA on Wednesday asked the police department to issue and verifies the identity cards to all its members to prevent similar incidences from happening in the future.

“From time to time, our members especially the young drivers have lost their life to kidnappers and car lifters and all this has happened due to non-verification of new and old drivers and also due to the non-availability of a proper stand,” MTTA general secretary Diganta Nath said.

Coming to passengers’  identification MTTA Secretary Diganta Nath said, that passenger’s have to prove the identity before they can hire tourist taxi’s from Shillong

“Passenger’s identification will imply for all passengers boarding on a hire basis and not on a share basis”, Nath said.

Condemning the kidnapped and murder of Mawlong by a five member gang of car lifters, the Association urged upon the police to take strong action against them in order to prevent such thing to happen again in future.

The association also urged upon the police department to take strong action against the culprits and deal firmly according to the law.

Meanwhile, coming to the involvement of the gang in kidnapping and murdering of Mawlong, Nath said that the those involve in the crime which include Gautam, Sanjay Biswa who was a tourist taxi driver and Prakash will be banned to drive tourist taxi in meghalya for life.(SP News)
