Mukhtar Choudhury is re-elected as President of Minority Welfare Society

GUWAHATI, APRIL 29: Mukhtar Hussain Ahmed Choudhury, was elected President of the Minority Welfare Society (MWS) Guwahati at the Annual General Meeting of the Society held in Guwahati on Sunday. A 29-member executive body was also elected simultaneously to run the affairs of the Society for coming three years.

The Minority Welfare Society (MWS) is a socio-cultural organisation of minority community families of the Barak Valley who are today inhabitants of Guwahati. The 17th Annual General Meeting of the Society was held on Sunday with a daylong colourful programme.

The most important aspect of the AGM was the felicitation accorded to the achievers from different segments of the society. One youngster, Arif Ahmed Choudhury, who cleared both Assam Judicial Service Examination and the Assam Civil Service Examination, was felicitated by MWS. Similarly, Ashraf Ahmed Choudhury who got selected in Assam Judicial Service and Manzoor Elahi Barbhuyan who cracked the ACS to qualify for the post of Inspector of Taxes were also felicitated. A special mention was made of Sharmin Choudhury, who became the first girl from the community to be admitted to the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong.

Two senior members of the Society, Abdul Hoque and Bahauddin Laskar were honoured on their promotion to the posts of Commissioner, Legislative Department and Chief Engineer, PHE, Government of Assam respectively.

Earlier, a Women’s Conclave was organised which was addressed by Raina Khanam Majumdar, Professor of Arabic, Gauhati University; Sufia Ahmed Barlaskar, Burhana Begum Choudhury and Nazma Ahmed, all social workers.

Presenting the annual report of the Society, Abdul Waris Choudhury, General Secretary informed the audience that the membership of MWS has increased to 745 families and the Society has taken up a number of projects for the welfare and development of the community. MWS raised about Rs 5 lakh for educational rehabilitation of 20 strife-torn students of the BTAC area last year.

With support received from Mahbubul Hoque, MWS set up the Prof Quomrul Hoque Memorial Endowment which is extending Rs 20,000 as micro finance loans to needy and underprivileged people for setting up small business and become self-reliant thereby.

Abdul Malik, former Election Commissioner of Assam; Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury, leading lawyer; and Dr Abu Saleh Najmuddin, former Health Minister of Assam spoke on the occasion.(SP News)
