Mukul sell the idea of “secularism” “pro-tribal” in Garo hills

Tura, March 27: Meghalaya chief minister, Mukul Sangma today toured
several places in South Garo Hills to drum up support for Congress
candidate, Daryl William Momin.
Mukul made an attempt to draw an emotion chord with the people by
trying to sell the idea of “secularism” and pro tribal ideology of
Congress party.
Addressing a poll campaign at Rongara, he said, “A’chik in Bangladesh,
Tripura and Assam do not enjoy the privilege there but Congress has
ensured the indigenous rights of the Garos in Meghalaya”.
He made a comparison of various rights enshrined by the constituted
under sixth schedule for the Garos in Meghalaya.
“You own the land, government has no ownership. You have rights over
forest and natural resources. This was guaranteed by the visionary
leaders of the Congress”, he said.
Williamson Sangma, aptly termed as the architect of Meghalaya and the
founder chief minister launched Congress party during Indira Gandhi’s
tenure as Prime Minister, as he was convinced with the ideology of the
party.
Williamson Sangma was a native of Siju in South Garo Hills.
“Captain Williamson is an acceptable figure among all tribes in
Meghalaya. His contribution can never be forgotten. We are fortunate
to have young and educated Daryl William Momin, grandson of Captain
Williamson as our candidate to fulfill the aspiration of our people”,
he said.
Making sharp comment against Purno Sangma, who has won nine
consecutive times since 1977 from Tura parliamentary seat, he said,
“Purno has enjoyed all power and status as a Congress leader. Garo
hills have given verdict in his favor for three decades. Today, he is
shuffling around different parties. How can he fulfill our
aspiration?”
Pitching hard for Daryl Momin, he said, “It is time for all of us to
elect Momin, who is a Congress nominee for Tura Lok Sabha seat”.
Enlightening the gathering at various rallies that Congress party in
Meghalaya has been able to implement various development and welfare
programme, he said, “You have to learn to make your leaders
accountable, which will ensure holistic development. I am working to
ensure an accelerated growth for Meghalaya”.
He even said, “I will come to you after the election to discuss, what
you need and will ensure that works are done in your area”.
Castigating Purno for his remark that Meghalaya will not receive
funds, if BJP and NDA form the government, he said, “Let me tell you,
allocation of fund is done by an independent body – ‘planning
commission’ and not by any government. Meghalaya will continue to
receive funds based on the 10:90 per cent share of tax, which are
earmarked for North Eastern states”.
Making a scatting attack on Purno, he stated that Purno has forged an
alliance with BJP and Narendra Modi for his personal gains.
Negating all propaganda of BJP, he said, “Be assured that Congress is
forming the government and there is nothing to worry. Be assured that
the party, which is deep rooted, will never collapse”.
