Shillong, May 31: Every year the UN observes 5th June as World Environment Day (WED). This year’s UNEP Theme for WED 2013 is “Think. Eat. Save.” The emphasis is on “reducing our food-prints,” which resonates with the campaign of the National Council of Churches (NCCI) on Food-Justice for Life.
The NCCI is saddened today to know that India and Japan have agreed to “accelerate” negotiations for an early conclusion of the much anticipated bilateral civil nuclear deal.
The Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said during a joint press conference in Tokyo (at which you were present), “The two countries will accelerate negotiations for the early conclusion of the civilian nuclear agreement”. The negotiations for the civil nuclear cooperation agreement have not made much headway, as you know, since Japan was struck by Fukushima nuclear disaster in March 2011.
The NCCi reminded the prime minister ahead of his visit to Tokyo, when he said , “I do recognize there are problems in Japan and there are elections to the upper house which take place later this year. But, I do hope that we can make progress in the civil nuclear energy cooperation.”
The NCCI has been engaged in NO NUKE campaigns considering NUKE as hazardous and anti-earth creature communities, including human communities. Also, NUKE projects make the earth communities poor and weak in terms of economic and social poverty, forceful displacement and migration.
As to meaningfully commemorate the WED 2013 on the 5th June 2013, the NCCI appeals to you and to the Prime Minister of Japan, and all nations to stop thinking of erecting new nuke plants and projects in order to ‘save’ the earth (so that she can retain her fertility and feed the earth communities), and to ensure food–justice.
Therefore, the NCCI invites the Indian Government to join the NO NUKE campaign and urgently plead to STOP conversations and negotiations on new NUKE projects. Also, we urge you to declare India as NO NUKE and Anti-Nuke country on WED 2013. In the presentation sent to the prime minister of India was sign by Rev. Fr. Aswin Fernandis, Chair Person, CJPC,Rev. R. Christopher Rajkumar, Executive Secretary, CJPC Rev. Dr. Roger Gaikwad, General Secretary, NCCI.(SP News)
